This work began in 2020. It was originally planned as an in-person performance. But because of the pandemic situation in Peru and all the socio-political uncertainty, it changed to a virtual format. The piece tells the story of our lives as creators during the pandemic, right before our 50th anniversary.
«I WANT TO BELIEVE I’M COMING BACK» is a virtual narrative in which Yuyachkani’s actors and actresses invite us into their vision of theater as a way of life. It is an intimate story where they reveal their bodies and memories, their personal spaces, and their solitary creative processes during confinement.
The piece is based on the perspective of artists in their senior years, creating during a pandemic. This is a unique combination, and it marks Yuyachkani`s 50th year. This work combines personal testimony, fiction, archival material, and repertoire. The body scores, presences, and characters from Yuyachkani’s earlier works are revisited from time to time, reappearing in new contexts. We call this process “post-production”, and it is a fundamental component of this new piece. Old presences from earlier works come to support this new creative process, where Yuyachkani reflects on its 50 years of life while also commemorating the Bicentennial of peruvian independence.
«I WANT TO BELIEVE I’M COMING BACK» is both a celebration of life and of theater. A gathering born of fragility, but also of resilience and strength. It also offers a universal perspective – inviting reflection and proposing artistic viewpoints on the condition of citizenship in this new Covid-19 context. The piece delves into the theatricality of imprisonment and the exploration of scenic languages in the virtual world.
